Advanced technologies for vaccine research

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) nearly caused the world to come to a halt in early 2020. But now that we have passed the first year of the pandemic, hope is on the horizon. Various vaccines have been created to steer this virus off course, in an attempt to achieve eradication, herd immunity, or possibly a more tempered strain that can be easily managed. Hundreds of academic and corporate scientists have used existing tools and techniques to develop vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19. In this collection of articles, we highlight the research and applications that are providing deeper insights into the interactions between the virus spike protein and its receptor on host cells, and elucidate the cascade of humoral immunity following vaccination.
